How to create a calmer corner without redesigning your home
Start by subtracting stimulation rather than buying a room full of equipment.
Pick a low-traffic spot
A corner away from the television, kitchen noise and constant movement is often enough. Let the child know it is available when they want it.
Reduce competing inputs
Lower harsh lighting, mute background TV and reduce visual clutter. A comfortable seat or cushion and a familiar item can be more useful than lots of novelty.
Ask, don’t assume
Sensory preferences are individual. What feels calming to one child may feel uncomfortable to another, so ask the child or parent/carer what usually helps.
Sensory products are not presented as medical treatments. Seek qualified advice where personalised support is needed.
