The Kid Ready checklist

A quick way to prepare a home before children arrive. It is deliberately practical, not exhaustive.

Whole home

Secure unstable furniture and televisions where appropriate. Put medicines, chemicals, alcohol and sharp items out of reach. Check accessible cords, blind chains, batteries and magnets. Know where keys, exits and emergency contacts are.

Kitchen & meals

Move knives, hot appliances and cleaning products away from easy reach. Check food allergies and dietary needs with the parent/carer. Use age-appropriate seating and tableware.

Bathroom

Lock away medicines, razors and chemicals. Check hot-water and slip risks. Never leave young children unattended around water.

Sleepover

Confirm sleeping arrangements are suitable for the child's age. Keep a clear route to the bathroom and exits. Ask about bedtime routine, comfort items and night-light preferences.

Outside

Check gates, pools, tools, chemicals, trampolines and pets. Remove trip hazards and secure sheds/garages where needed.
